The habit of family gathered for a meal is one that spills over and blesses in so many other areas of family life. Today, I share several helpful posts from our authors.

The incredible gift of the ordinary! Glory comes streaming from the table of daily life. ~ Macrina Wiederkehr

10 Habits for the Family Table:

1. Celebrate Every Day (You are Special Plate – pictured above) “Why not find something to celebrate every day? A lost tooth, an extra measure of kindness, diligence in school work or finding the long-lost library book.”

2. The Habit of the Table – “eating together as a family is a very important part of being a family. Maybe we should look at it as an honor to gather around the table. God himself is preparing a table at which we will gather one day. If it is important for His family should it not be important to mine.”

3. What’s for Dinner: Presentation “Don’t I just have one of the kids set the table, put the food out and ring the dinner bell?  Well there is absolutely nothing wrong with that and it’s what happens at our house on the majority of days. However, God spoke to my heart some time ago about all the events and parties I would do for extended family, friends and church and asked me if I shouldn’t do the same for my own family on a regular basis…”

4. Mad, Sad, Glad – a dinner conversation starter game. “The game also gets everyone talking, allowing us parents to help the children to work through some emotions we each face daily. Reflect on the day. We might even remember something we’d already dismissed in our minds.”

5. Fun Food for Football Watching – great, fall favorites!

6. Manners Monday – “We’ll start with the basics of table manners and go from there, keeping our special dinner night  as a perfect opportunity to practice what we’ve learned. Then we’ll add in other social graces.”

7. A basket centerpiece for the table – “a basket with a bible, devotion book, history book  and poetry. I am not talking about having a long lesson or bible study but just taking 5-10 minutes to read something that will help, inspire, bless, encourage and maybe even correct or rebuke us. With this basket right in my face at the table it just makes it harder to forget the habit that I am trying to establish for our family.”

8. Help for Picky Eaters – “If you have a child like this, hang in there. But here are a few things that seemed to work the best…”

9. A Grand Lunch time Adventure – “During our lunch break, we gather around the table and go on exciting adventures.”

10. Dance with the Dishes – make clearing the table easy and fun!

When something is right in front of you it’s hard to ignore it. I’ve seen many different versions of a Bible basket shared around the internet lately and I was inspired. I gathered all our Bibles into one basket. I put the basket right in the center of the family room table.

The basket is simply a cheap one I picked up at Walmart in the back to school sale aisle. Yet it’s sturdy enough for every day use.

Keeping up the habit of seeking Him, I’m sharing the third in the Practical Prayer series at Passionate Purposeful Parenting today. Won’t you join me?

And here at Habits for a Happy Home, the rest of the series:

How do you keep The Word right in the center of your day?

Don’t miss the giveaway at the end! One blessed reader will win a copy of Sherri Wilson Johnson’s novel.

Purity.

A romance novel.

Usually when most think of a romance novel they don’t have in mind Christian purity. But romance and purity make a powerful combination – and God-ordained testimony. That’s just what Sherri Wilson Johnson has done in her first book, To Dance Once More. Not to mention a ‘wisk you away’ story. I read this book in less than a week because the suspense of Lydia’s story had me coming back for more.

Main character: Debutante Lydia Barrington dreams of traveling the world. She’s frustrated with her protected life at Live Oaks Plantation. She longs to make a difference in the world while her sisters and friends dream of marriage and home. Ultimately she is faced with a terrible decision – one which will change the fate of her family and her life dreams.

Setting: Set in Victorian-era Florida. Picturesque live oaks. Florida Spanish moss. A few times the characters are at the beach – which touches the beach-lover in me.

Message:

  • An inspiring dependence upon God.
  • The struggles of young adult years.
  • The conflict of passions versus the promises of purity.
  • The do-it-in-my-own-strength battles. Go my own way. Figure it out on my own.
  • The family dynamics of siblings. Ultimate obedience to parents.
  • Southern social graces.
  • The main character sees the consequences of poor choices in her own life, as well as in the lives of family and community members.

To Dance Once More holds those Southern clichés which speak easily to my born-and-raised-in-the-south heart. The historical references frame the setting. The 1800s Florida panhandle setting makes for a romantic novel. The lessons Lydia faces about God’s will draw the reader into her life. Conflict, struggle, decisions and a surprising sacrifice.

To Dance Once More is available from bookstores here.

“Passion. Friendship. A bitter enemy. A life-changing decision.”

Plus, Sherri’s second book is due out soon! Here’s a little taste of what’s to come in Song of the Meadowlark...When trusting others causes nothing but pain and rejection, and loving ends only in loss, what will it take to restore hope again? Read more on Song of the Meadowlark and watch a trailer here.

Part Two of The Habit of Hymns

We all have those moments. The overwhelming, frustrating time of wanting to yell or scream at the top of our lungs. Well, I’ve found one way of diverting the irritating. When you want to scream, just sing. Turn it to praise!

A recent example? You know those packing peanuts – the ones that cushion important mail deliveries? Well, one creative child spread them far and wide in the most quiet way ever. When I happened upon the pink packing peanut perfection I truly wanted to scream. But, suddenly, this hymn popped in my head:

Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow! Praise Him All Creatures Here Below…Praise Him Above Ye Heavenly Host. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen!!

Here are a few more to sing out:

  • “God bless America! Land that I love!”
  • “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus; There’s just something about that name! Master, Savior, Jesus, Like the fragrance after the rain…”
  • “O the King is coming, the King is coming! I just heard the trumpets sounding, And now His face I see…”

And do you know what happened? The frustration turned to LAUGHTER! We all dissolved into silly laughter. And it was so good.

…in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18

“Come on, let’s clean this up,” I was able to say in a calm voice. And it truly didn’t take long to get all those peanuts rounded up in the trash.

The time it took to turn that frustration into song? Less time than the clean up.

How about you? Do you burst into song over pink peanut perfection?
